First Steps to take upon arrival to NL

Here are some essential first steps to follow once you arrive to Newfoundland and Labrador:
  1. Connect with a Support Organization: Reach out to organizations like the Association of New Canadians (ANC), Amal, or Bethesda for guidance and assistance.
  2. Secure Housing: Begin your search for a suitable place to live, whether it's renting or buying.
  3. Establish Communication
    • Cell Phone Services in Newfoundland and Labrador (2025):  Bell, Rogers, Telus, Fido, Koodo, Virgin Plus, Chatr, Public Mobile . You can visit the Avalon Mall, where you will find several of these providers.
    • SIM card Cost: $10–$45 CAD Available as physical SIM or eSIM
    • Prepaid Plans: Cost: $15–$29 CAD/month. Includes 500 MB to 15 GB, unlimited calls and texts. Providers: Chatr, Lucky Mobile, Public Mobile
    • Postpaid plans:  Cost: $35–$50 CAD/month. Includes 4–6 GB and unlimited calls. Providers: Koodo, Fido, Virgin Plus
    • Tips: Be sure to check the terms and conditions, taxes, promotions, offers, and coverage. Research and select your best option in Plan Hub and WhistleOut
  4. Obtain Essential Documents: Apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN) and a Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Care Plan (MCP) health card.
  5. Manage Finances: Open a bank account to handle your financial transactions.
  6. Access Healthcare: Register for a doctor or health clinic, and familiarize yourself with emergency services (dial 911).
  7. Language Learning: Consider taking English language courses to improve your communication skills. See Language 
  8. Education for Children: Enroll your children in schools to ensure their education.
  9. Immigration Follow-up: Register with the Office of Immigration, especially if you're a provincial nominee.
  10. Francophone Support: If you're a Francophone, connect with francophone settlement services for specific assistance.
