Newfoundland and Labrador can be accessed by air, sea, or land, depending on where in the province you’re going. Whether you're arriving on the island of Newfoundland or traveling to mainland Labrador, there are convenient travel options to help you reach your destination.
✈️ By Air
Several airlines offer flights to and within the province. Newfoundland and Labrador has multiple regional and international airports:
🛬 On the Island of Newfoundland
-
St. John’s International Airport (YYT): Located in the capital city, this is the province’s busiest airport, with flights to major cities across Canada, the U.S., and seasonal international destinations.
⚠️ Note: Don’t confuse St. John’s, NL with Saint John, NB – they are different cities in different provinces. - Gander International Airport (YQX): Located in central Newfoundland, this airport provides regional connections and is historically known as a transatlantic emergency landing site.
- Deer Lake Regional Airport (YDF): Serving western Newfoundland, including the Corner Brook area and Gros Morne National Park. Offers year-round connections to Canadian cities.
🛬 In Mainland Labrador
- Goose Bay Airport (YYR): Located in Happy Valley–Goose Bay, this is the main hub for air travel in central and eastern Labrador, with regular service to Newfoundland and other parts of Atlantic Canada.
- Wabush Airport (YWK): Located near Labrador City and Wabush, this airport serves western Labrador and connects with regional flights to Quebec and Newfoundland.
🛳 By Sea
Marine Atlantic operates year-round ferry services from North Sydney, Nova Scotia, to Newfoundland:
- Port aux Basques: The most frequently used ferry route, landing in southwestern Newfoundland. This service runs year-round.
- Argentia: A seasonal route (summer only) that lands closer to St. John’s on the eastern side of the island. Ideal for those driving to or from eastern Newfoundland.
🚗 By Land (Accessing Labrador)
Labrador can be reached by road through Quebec:
- Take Route 389 from Baie-Comeau, Quebec, which connects to Labrador City and the Trans-Labrador Highway (Route 500/510).
- The Trans-Labrador Highway stretches across Labrador and connects to towns including Wabush, Churchill Falls, Happy Valley–Goose Bay, Port Hope Simpson, and Red Bay.
This scenic route offers a remote but beautiful drive—perfect for those who enjoy the open road and nature.
